3 Benefits of a Multi-Zone Kitchen

September 22, 2021 | Kitchens

Your kitchen has so many functions. It’s a space to make beautiful meals and for families to gather, from small day-to-day moments to big holidays.

With more families cooking together and the steady increase of countertop kitchen appliances, we are seeing kitchen remodeling projects calling for multi-zone kitchens. Gone are the days of the work triangle kitchen layout—it’s been replaced by the multi-zone kitchen.

What is a Multi-Zone Kitchen?

A multi-zone kitchen is designed to split up areas into different zones for a variety of needs. This is a complete departure from the triangle layout, which attempted to create efficiency by putting the refrigerator, stove, and sink at completely opposite places in the kitchen.

While this 1900s trend worked well at the time, it’s really only effective if only one person is using the kitchen at a time. As more families spend time together in the kitchen, it doesn’t work as well today.

In our kitchen remodeling experience, we tend to see five major kitchen zones:

  • Prep.
A designated place to prepare dinner ingredients as well as store cutlery and plates.
  • Cooking.
Where your stove and oven are, as well as countertop appliances (i,.e., a mixer or air fryer).
  • Consumables.
This consists of your pantry and fridge.
  • Cleaning.
Included in this zone are your sink(s) and dishwasher.
  • Flex.
Used for other activities including homework, entertaining, or even a place for the family pup to have his food and water bowl!
