Designing a 3-Season Porch You’ll Never Want to Leave

In Minnesota, making the most of the outdoors is sometimes easier said than done. With snow on the ground for half the year and mosquitoes to contend with all summer, there are usually only a few weeks of perfect porch weather. If that sounds familiar, a three season porch might be the ideal solution for your home.

A 3 season porch gives you the best of both worlds: fresh air, beautiful scenery, a cozy sitting area, and no bugs. Perhaps best of all, you can enjoy your outdoor space even if it’s raining or a little chilly outside.

If you’ve always dreamed of building a screened porch in the Twin Cities, our designers at James Barton Design-Build are here to help. In this blog, we’ll explore 3 season porch ideas that extend your living area and give you more natural light and fresh air without fully remodeling your home.

What is a 3 Season Porch?

If you want to build a new porch, it helps to know the different options available to you. Three season porches might seem self-explanatory, but it’s easy to confuse them with other types of porches and add-ons.

A three season porch is an uninsulated addition to your home, enclosed with glass or vinyl windows. They typically have flooring, furniture, and interior finishes that make them feel like an extension of your home.

Three-season patios aren’t usually designed with HVAC systems or a full foundation. This makes them more affordable than full home additions. As a trade-off, you can typically enjoy your porch for only part of the year because they provide less warmth.

One of the biggest differences between a 3 season room vs a screened porch is the windows.

  • 3 season porch windows are closer to the windows you might have in the rest of your home. They are made of glass or vinyl to protect against the elements and make your porch more versatile. The windows are usually large so you can enjoy the view.
  • Screened porches usually don’t have traditional windows. Instead, they tend to have fully screened panels that don’t open and close like regular windows. A screened porch is closer to a regular deck with the added benefit of having a roof and keeping bugs out.

3 Season Porch Designs

The design choices are nearly endless when you build a three season room. You’ll want to think about the flooring, walls, windows, temperature control, and additional features that make the space your own.

  • Flooring. As a transition area between the inside and outside of your home, it’s best to avoid carpet and other materials that are difficult to clean. Tile or luxury vinyl plank flooring are usually good choices.
  • Heating & cooling. Even though three season rooms don’t have HVAC systems, you can still install features that make the temperature more comfortable. A fireplace or built-in heater makes your room more usable in the fall, while a ceiling fan helps in summer.
  • Windows. 3 season porch windows often look like those in your home, but they typically aren’t made from insulated glass. Because they aren’t intended to insulate the room, you can design your space with large, panoramic windows that let in the view.
  • Walls. Although they aren’t insulated, 3-season rooms are typically framed in a similar way to the rest of your home. That means you can design the room to look like an extension of your home that flows naturally rather than looking tacked on.
  • Ceilings. Because you don’t have to design with insulation in mind, three season porches give you more flexibility to create a vaulted ceiling that lets in more light and makes the room feel spacious.

One of the best parts of building a 3-season room versus a screened porch is that you can decorate your space like any other area of the home. As a weatherized room, you can enhance your space with a TV, comfortable furniture, and customized lighting to create a luxury escape.

Motorized blinds are also popular for creating privacy and sun protection. And with the amount of natural light they provide, three season rooms also make great places to keep your houseplants.

Three season porches are popular in Minnesota, and for good reason. They’re more affordable than a full home addition because they typically don’t involve insulation, HVAC, or double-pane glass windows.
