Siding to Suit Your Home’s Style

July 9, 2022 | Exteriors

New and refreshed siding enhances any exterior home remodel. But with so many options out there, which one is right for your home? If you’re unsure of where to start, the JBDB team is here to help.

Today, the most common siding styles include:

  • Vertical Siding
  • Horizontal Siding (also known as Lap Siding)
  • Cedar Shakes
  • Board and Batten

Now, let’s look at some popular home styles here in Minnesota and which siding configurations complement them best.

Popular Home Styles

Craftsman

Craftsman homes are known for their unique details like gabled rooflines, tapered columns, and exposed rafters. These exteriors typically include a mix of siding styles – for instance, horizontal siding with shake accents in the gables.

“Mixing and matching siding styles the right way adds interest and can really enhance the Craftsman-style look homeowners want,” says Kayleigh Queoff, one of JBDB‘s designers. “A cohesive combination of colors and textures, including wood or stone, bring your Craftsman home to life.”

Colonial

The clean lines of horizontal siding are perfect for the stately elegance of a colonial home. Because this style harkens back to the Colonial days, homeowners often choose horizontal engineered wood siding. Engineered wood takes the timeless, historical beauty of wood siding and adds durability, an essential factor in any Minneapolis exterior remodeling project.

Brick adds a sense of charm, beauty, and history to a colonial-style house. If properly maintained, brick can last for hundreds of years. Its durability is practically unmatched, and it’s resistant to external factors such as bugs, water, or fire.

Modern Farmhouse

With its unique, rustic feel, board and batten are popular for modern farmhouses. Wide boards are covered with another narrow wooden or vinyl strip to achieve this timeless look.

You could also opt for eye-catching vertical siding to give your modern farmhouse the appearance of height. Whichever you choose, contrasting colors add dimension, helping your home pop from the curb.

Traditional

If you want to underscore your traditional home design, you can’t go wrong with horizontal siding.

“Horizontal siding remains the standard option for homeowners, and for good reason,” says Syndey Monson, another JBDB designer. “This classic look won’t go out of style any time soon, which is important if you want to sell your home down the line.”

On the other hand, you could always decide to go against the grain. Add a touch of modernity to your traditional home, vertical siding, board and batten, and shakes are often used as accents or as a more specialty look.

Don’t Forget About the Trim

Once you’ve decided on your style and color, it’s time to talk about trim; an essential accent for your exterior home remodel. Whether it’s gable accents, brackets or corbels, or window trim, the JBDB team can help you determine what options best enhance the style of your home’s exterior
