Dining room lighting influences this space’s look, feel, and functionality for gathering, enjoying meals, and laughing with loved ones. As you plan your dining room remodel, it’s best to think through lighting needs and wishes as you embark on your planning process. After all, they can significantly influence the room’s style, layout, and material choices.
The Four Primary Types of Statement Dining Room Light Fixtures
When you think about dining room lighting, there are four main types of fixtures to consider:
- Chandeliers hang from the ceiling, typically centered above the dining room table. Though they come in different styles, they have one element in common: multiple light bulbs.
“The great thing about chandeliers is they can be as ornate or as simple as you’d like,” said Syndey Monson, one of JBDB’s in-house designers. “Our team can help you find the right model for your dream design concept.”
2. Pendant lights are similarly suspended from the ceiling but hold a single light.
“Pendant lights offer the chance for versatility in your dining room remodel,” said Kayleigh Queoff, another JBDB designer. “You can hang multiple pendant lights or go for an oversized option to really make a statement.”
3. Sconces are affixed to the wall and point upwards. Hang them symmetrically around the room. Or, place them on either side of a focal point, such as a mirror or piece of art.
“Lighting doesn’t have to be the focal point of your dining room,” said Monson. “In fact, you can use sconces to highlight a design aspect of your dining room, whether it’s a family heirloom or hanging sculpture.”
4. Recessed lighting goes right into your ceiling for a streamlined design. If they don’t cast enough light, you can always use them in conjunction with another of the options mentioned above.
“Recessed lights work in almost every space, but I particularly love using it for modern dining room lighting,” added Queoff. “The lack of cords or chains can really open up the higher half of the room.”
As you think about how these fixtures work together, JBDB can help create a layered lighting plan that offers versatility in your dining room.
Complement Your Dining Room Table
If you’re dreaming of a hanging light fixture above your table, make sure they’re complementary — after all, these two elements are working in tandem to give this room its charm. If you have a circular table, look for a circular fixture. For a larger table, your selection should cast enough light for everyone.
The Room’s Size, Shape, and Structure
Use lights to enhance the result of your dining room remodel by considering the room’s size, shape, and structure. A dining room with large windows may benefit from smaller fixtures that don’t block the view. Conversely, a higher ceiling could be the perfect spot for a grander chandelier or pendant light.
There are endless styles of dining room light fixtures, from farmhouse to modern. JBDB’s design team can help you focus in on the right choices.
