Morgan Longhenry is a valued part of the James Barton Design-Build team and has helped bring the dreams of countless homeowners to life. We recently sat down with her to learn more about her background in the industry, her home design process, and what she likes best about her job.
What drew you to the home design industry?
I knew I wanted to do something in the field since I was young. I loved watching HGTV, rearranging my room and for Christmas I would ask for graph paper so I could create my own floorplans. It was an instant attraction to be able to create a space that you can love and can change over and over again.
What do you like best about your job?
I love meeting with all different types of clients that have their own personal styles. They help me bring out my creativity and when projects are done, having a happy client is the best feeling. Collaborating with them is also awesome. When an idea is brought up to the client and it’s something that they get excited about, I’m happy that I get to help execute the plans.
Where do you get started when designing a home?
Right at the beginning. At our first meeting, we do a walkthrough with the owner(s) on site and talk about the project. I get to see what is working in their space and what doesn’t. Brainstorming begins at the beginning and follows for weeks ahead.
What things do you consider when starting a design?
There are many questions I ask clients. Do they entertain? Are there kids in the home? Do they plan on staying there for the foreseeable future? What is at the top of their priority list? Lifestyle plays a lot into design, because of course we can make things look amazing, but does it function for the people living in the home.
How involved are the homeowners in the design process?
They are involved in everything. They usually come with initial ideas and I just piggy back and blow them into a reality. They are the ones making those final floor plan decisions and all of the selections. I am there to help a long and guide them so there are as little unanswered questions as possible.
Do you have a favorite home design that you have worked on?
Not one specifically, but it’s always the ones that are willing to take a risk. Maybe spend a little extra money for something more custom, or pick a fun color for cabinetry and tile. I love seeing when something unique is thought of and the homeowners are right on board with it. It’s just one extra item to make their home unique.
What are some new home design trends that we should keep an eye out for?
Mixing of different materials is still a big thing and I don’t think it will go away any time soon. Whether it’s wood and stone, or different metals on hardware, we are still seeing a lot of it. Something else is being able to make your home timeless. Let it be minimal and neutral for the “permanent” materials and finishes, but add colorful and unique touches to rugs, curtains, paint, pillows, etc. stuff that is easy to swap out when your style changes.
